The Adena lived in the northeastern woodlands region of the United States, Ohio, Kentucky, and surrounding regions in modern day. They lived in groups of 25-150 people near rivers and tributaries.


government

They did not have a real structural government, but instead continued following the basic political practices of their ancestors from the Archaic period.


religion

The Adena practiced Shamanism. Shamanism is a religious phenomenon based upon a shaman, a person who is believed to hold multiple powers and send the dead to the underworld. Tables, pottery, and artwork were also of their religion.


population

The Adena consisted of multiple related tribes, so there is not an estimated population available. However, groups of around 25-150 lived together.


technology

The Adena used stone tools, axes, and hoes. They made combs and beads out of antlers and bones, as well. Spoons and other beads were made of conchand bracelets, rings, and more beads used copper.


food

The Adena ate grasses, elk, deer, nuts, bear, pumpkin, sunflower, squash, turkey, and many more.


Language

The Adena went extinct before the Europeans arrived at America.

The Adena built many mounds, hundreds in number. They are thought to be a burial place or a gathering place and were built up of carefully selected soil.
